C[C1]

Do you support:

1.      -  stopping development on the Waterloo Moraine groundwater recharge areas on the West Side of Kitchener and Waterloo

U: As I stated at the Oct. 11/06 Regional Council meeting, I have listened to the concerns and want to hear the technical comments in the review process first.  It will then be decided in 2007 whether staff or Regional Council will make the decision.

C[C2]

Y

2.      -  stopping development of Hidden Valley

N: Some development can occur while protecting sensitive areas.

Y

3.      -  increasing urban intensification and brownfield development

Y: I have and will continue to support urban intensification and brownfield development

NMI

4.      -  a defined urban border to prevent further greenfield development

Y

Y

5.      - more Environmentally Sensitive Landscape (ESL) designations in the Region

U: I supported the 2 recent designations.  Others would depend on the circumstances and details.

Y

6.      - recreational and commercial facilities in all neighbourhoods

Y

N

Climate Change:

Do you support local emissions control through:

  1. - municipal practices and purchases

Y

Climate Change: This is an issue best addressed with the federal not municipal politicians.

Y

  1. - building codes

Y

Y

  1. - appropriate land use plans and policies (e.g. reduced parking requirements for developments providing bike racks)

I support progressive policies but they have to be a balance of all interests.

NMI

  1. - the use of alternative energy sources (e.g. solar)

Y

Y

  1. - changes in local codes and bylaws to encourage alternative energy sources

Y

N

Heritage:

Do you support:

-preserving heritage buildings, especially through innovative re-use for lofts/office space?

Y

Y

Waste:

Do you support:

  1. - stronger waste recycling program for the Region

Y

Waste: I am strongly in favor for waste recycling programs for the Region implemented in a  user friendly manner.
There can be more done to divert recyclable waste from landfill sites.

Y

  1. - technologies that re-use construction material

Y

Y

  1. - a “green-box” programme for compostables

Y

Green-box programs for compostables properly implemented would greatly  reduce the load on our landfill sites

Y

Water:

Janis Hedrich

Do you support:

  1. - financial or other incentives to encourage water conservation measures for local business and homeowners

Y

There is a limit to conservation, Urban Planning would solve most of the problems associated with our water problems.

Y

  1. - stricter groundwater protection bylaws

I believe we have strict bylaws now so I can’t answer the question without more specifics.

Our ground water needs protection not just from contaminations from salt  and chemicals but by the strain urban sprawl and intensification creates on our water table.

Y

Green Space:

Do you support:

  1. - increasing expenditures to obtain parks and natural areas in the Region or your municipality

Y

Again, Kitchener politicians have completely neglected green space, trails and parks and even made attempts to sell parks or part of to developers as was the case with Kiwanis park as one example. Attend Cambridge council meeting on October 30, 2006 concerning loss of green space to developers.  I will be there, will you??

Y

  1. - not allowing motorized transportation on trails in municipal parks

Y: There may be some exceptions depending on the location and type of trail.

Since the summer of 2004 I walked many streets, parks and trails and to
date observed only city enforcement officers on trails and in parks on
motorcycles.

Y

Procurement:

Do you support:

  1. - the community obtaining goods and services locally to limit transport-related pollution and maximize local economic opportunities

Y: Both of these questions and answers need to be balanced in order to not inadvertently cause a problem for local businesses in bidding on projects outside of our community.

Y

  1. - policies that will (within existing legislation) encourage local procurement of materials and services for  your municipality

Y

Y

Pesticides:

A Region-wide bylaw, effective 2007, requires signs and notification of all pesticide applications and prohibits only the use of herbicides in July and August. It is supported by a $0.5 million campaign to educate people on pesticide alternatives.

  1. Should the bylaw be more restrictive?

N: Not at this time.  We need to monitor compliance first.

C[C3]

Y

  1. Do you support the education cost?

Y

U

  1. Do you think the Region should stop the use of larvicides (insecticide) in catch basins for West Nile Virus carrying mosquitoes?

N

N

Air Quality:

Poor air quality is a major issue for Regional residents and contributes to premature death for some and respiratory distress for everyone.

- What measures do you propose to alleviate this problem?

Encourage broader use of public transit.

Take action on the recommendations contained in Kitchener’s recent Air Quality report.

Promote less idling of vehicles.

Better transit service and a more user-friendly (cost-effective) service to encourage people to use public transit instead of their cars when possible.

Transportation:

Jon Huemiller

Janis Hedrich

To limit global warming, pollution and gridlock, alternatives to personal car use must be found. Do you support:

  1. Increased bus service

Y

C [C4]

When it comes to increased bus service, light rail, streetcars, airbus or
monorail as with  the majority of transit bus users I have spoken with
would prefer more IExpress buses.

Y

  1. Light rail

Y

U

  1. Streetcars

Y

N

  1. Airbus

U

NMI

  1. Monorail

U

NMI

  1. Other

I am supportive of the LRT proposal but the current EA will help to determine the appropriate mode.

  1. - increasing both on-street as well as off-street commuting and recreational bike and walking trails

Y

This would be covered under Urban Planning and Green Space.

Y

  1. - installing more bike racks in the core urban areas

Y

Y

  1. - promoting membership in the People’s Car Co-operative (i.e. car sharing) and promoting carpooling through Carpooltool.com, in combination with developing carpool parking lots (e.g. along Victoria Street in Kitchener)

Y

I am in complete support of carpooling.

NMI

  1. - GO Train or similar facilities coming to the Region

Y

Some of us have been making attempts to convince the province to extend
the GO Train to Waterloo region with no success.

Y

Gravel Extraction:

Do you support:

-stronger regulations for gravel extraction?

Y

NMI

Agriculture:

Do you support:

  1. -policies that will help local and organic farmers to market their produce in the Region

Y

I’m not sure if it would be a policy issue as much as a need for promotion and educating the public about organic produce.

  1. -stronger measures to reduce non-point source agricultural pollution (pesticide/fertilizer run-off, nutrient mismanagement) into our water

Y

Y
